Many medical procedures require you to sign a consent form before the doctor will perform the procedure. Essentially, these forms highlight the potential known risks that are associated with the procedure and the effects it could have on you, the patient. By signing the form, you acknowledge these risks and state that you understand that they’re a potential side effect of the procedure.
You may be concerned that by signing a consent form, you’ve given away your right to file a medical malpractice claim in the event something goes wrong, which is not the case. If the doctor performing the procedure fails to adhere to the standard of care which he or she should provide, and you suffer an injury as a result, you have the right to file a medical malpractice suit. Regardless of whether you sign a consent form, the doctor is still obligated to provide you with the recognized standard of care.
