According to a new study based on information from the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), the malpractice payments against anesthesiologists has decreased from $174.4 million to $91.1 million from 2005 to 2013. While this decrease has been a good thing, the focus seems to have shifted to suits involving outpatient services involving anesthesia.
Although there has been a shift in the number of suits involving inpatient and outpatient anesthesiologists, the amount paid in claims is still a lot less for outpatient services. It has been noted, though, that there is not a lot known regarding the effects of practice setting on malpractice payments. The study was based on data obtained from NPDB and presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting this year.
